6 jailed for killing woman in forced demolition

SIX men who led a forced demolition which resulted in a woman's death in Changchun, northeastern Jilin Province, were sentenced yesterday up to five years behind bars for manslaughter.

Wang Haibin, owner of the demolition company, asked Yang Zhe, project manager of Kexin Real Estate Development Co, for approval to forcibly demolish several old houses. Ma Ning, the legal person of Kexin, authorized it, says the Liaoyuan City Intermediate People's Court.

On the evening of March 26, 2011, Wang and Yang arrived at the site and directed Zhang Jihu, Zhang Jiming and Zhang Zhonghua to forcibly knock down the houses, the court says.

About a hundred of workers and 18 excavators leveled the 14 houses and a 48-year-old woman, Liu Shuxiang, was buried alive under debris and died later.

Wang received a five-year sentence; Zhang Jihu got four years; Zhang Jiming, Zhang Zhonghua, Yang Zhe and Ma Ning were sentenced to three years.

After the incident, the State Council ordered Changchun City government to make self-criticism and asked Mayor Cui Jie to make a public apology.
