6 kids drown in icy river

Six children drowned on Saturday in a river in Pingyao County, north China’s Shanxi Province, the local government said.

The youngsters, aged from 5 to 11, fell into the water while ice skating on a frozen section of the Huiji River in Nanzheng Village, witnesses were quoted as saying.

Police received a call about the incident at 4:47pm and immediately dispatched an emergency response team.

The bodies of four of the children were pulled from the river within the first 90 minutes of the operation, while the two others were recovered later by frogmen from under the ice.

All six were pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Police are investigating.
