6 killed as man rams car into pedestrians

THREE children were among six people killed when a driver rammed his car into vehicles and pedestrians in southeast China’s Fuzhou City yesterday.

Thirteen people were injured.

The victims were mostly from a nearby primary school and family members who had come to pick children up for lunch.

Police received a phone call at around 11:20am saying a man had driven off after hitting several pedestrians in what appeared to be a deliberate act in Qingshi Town, Xinhua news agency reported.

The car had collided with around 20 people and several vehicles over a 2-kilometer stretch of the road.

When police managed to bring the vehicle to a halt, the driver stayed inside the gold Lexus, threatening to ignite petrol he had in the vehicle, an eyewitness told Xinhua.

Police officers had to use a water gun to subdue Lin Jianxin, 37, from Changle City, and he was taken into custody at around 12:50pm.

According to Xinhua, Lin has told police he was upset by his divorce a few days ago.

The injured, who were taken to No. 2 People’s Hospital of Minhou County, were said to be in a stable condition.

An 8-year-old girl is being treated in the intensive care unit at Fuzhou General Hospital for serious head injuries, the Southeast Express newspaper said.

Another 8-year-old girl is recovering from her injuries, but her 10-year-old sister and younger brother were both killed. Her grandmother, who had come to pick her up, was also hit and is being treated for her injuries.

“I was there and I was helping a kid. He is dying and both of my hands are bloody,” said a witness, who added that he injured his foot when he was forced to jump out of the way as the speeding car approached.

A villager surnamed Wang said: “It was so horrible. I cannot help but feel chilled when I think of that moment now.”

The incident sparked anger online.

“It is outrageous that he let off his hatred to innocent people,” was a comment on Sina Weibo.

“The killer is coward who couldn’t cope with his own troubles and turned his anger on others,” another said.
