6 members of extortion gang get prison terms
SIX people have been jailed in southwest China's Chongqing City for blackmailing government officials, Lei Zhengfu among them, with secretly recorded sex videos.
Xiao Ye and Xu Sheqing, who had conspired to lure officials into having sex with women and recorded their encounters to blackmail them, were sentenced to 10 years and four years respectively by the Yubei District People's Court.
Yan Peng and Wang Jianjun, Xiao's accomplices, were sentenced to 3.5 years and 1.5 years with a 1.5 year reprieve respectively.
In February 2008, Xiao blackmailed Lei, the former secretary of Chongqing's Beibei District, for 3 million yuan (US$485,539).
Xiao also received 2 million yuan from Zhou Tianyun, former president of Chongqing Land Group, in September 2009.
Zhao Hongxia, who was recorded having sex with Lei, was jailed for two years with a two-year reprieve.
Tan Linling, who was recorded having sex with Zhou, was jailed for 18 months with an 18-month reprieve.
All six had been charged with extortion.
All their illegal earnings were confiscated by the court.
Xiao, Xu and Yan said they would be launching appeals. Zhao, Tan and Wang said they would not be appealing.
