6 million yuan showered on a funeral
A MIDDLE school official in Zhejiang Province was suspended for renting the school playground to a rich businessman to hold a lavish funeral for his mother, the local Qianjiang Evening News reported today.
Teachers of Xinhe Middle School in Wenling City complained about the noisy distractions for their students as mourners fired cannons, played funeral music and wailed for hours on the morning of March 4.
When students looked out of the windows, they saw their playground filled with a fleet of nine flower-decked Lincoln stretch limos, many luxury cars, a row of 16 gold-painted cannons, and more than a thousand monks and mourners paying tributes to an elderly woman whose large portrait hung above the stage.
The woman's six children were all rich entrepreneurs in real estate, hotel, mining and manufacturing businesses. They each pooled 1 million yuan to hold the funeral for their mother who raised them single-handedly.
The funeral attracted crowds of onlookers, who were each given hundreds or over a thousand of yuan plus two packs of cigarettes for attending the funeral. Vendors in the nearby streets were each given 500 yuan to clear from the sight.
Some critics said the family could have used the 6 million yuan for a better cause such as donating to the needy people. The Wenling City government convened a meeting shortly afterwards to minimize the bad influence caused by the funeral and punished those held responsible.
