6 more officials punished over slave labor scandal
SIX officials in the southwestern Sichuan Province were sacked and punished for failing to prevent a forced labor scandal in which 12 homeless men, eight of them mentally retarded, were sent to a remote quarry and worked like slaves for years.
They were the second group of officials punished after the news media exposed the appalling scandal. Investigators found a government welfare center was involved in the case.
The Communist Party's Quxian County Committee sacked Wang Yong, director of the county's civil affairs bureau; Liao Zebiao, chief of Qujiang Township; Fan Yun, deputy chief of Qujiang, according to the committee's statement yesterday.
