6 nabbed for poison-fishing in Anhui
SIX villagers in Anqing, Anhui Province, have been detained for putting a poisonous chemical into a river, killing lots of fish and forcing authorities to cut water supply for nearly four days.
The six suspects in Anqing admitted they and four other villagers put toxic Fenpropathrin into the Wanshui River, a major water source for local waterworks, and collected some 200 kilograms of poisoned fish last Tuesday, Beijing Times reported today.
The phenomenon of lots of dead fish floating in the river shocked local residents. Two water factories immediately halted their supply, forcing thousands of local homes to buy bottled water or fetch water from wells.
Police detained the six suspects on Thursday and are still hunting the other four. Water supply was restored after tests showed the water quality has met the safety standards..
