6 on trial over deadly care home fire
SIX people accused of being responsible for a fire that killed 39 senior citizens at a care home for the elderly in central China’s Henan Province went on trial yesterday.
The blaze occurred at 7:30pm on May 25, 2015, at privately owned Kangleyuan Rest Home in Lushan County, a complex of bungalows and dormitories that was home to 51 senior citizens, Lushan prosecutors said.
The fire, which was put out in less than an hour, engulfed structures occupied by seniors who were too frail to escape, prosecutors said.
The fire caused more than 20.64 million yuan (US$3.19 million) in damage, prosecutors said.
Investigators found substandard construction work and lax safety supervision were the main causes behind the blaze.
When the home was expanded in March 2013, the work was carried out by an unlicensed contractor, who built bungalows with flammable materials, said prosecutors.
The suspects were charged with causing a serious accident through negligence, China News Service reported.
