6 sentenced to jail for Nanjing factory blast that killed 22
SIX people, including three district officials, in Nanjing, capital of the eastern Jiangsu Province, yesterday received jail terms from three to nine years for a deadly explosion last July which killed 22 people and injured 120, Xinhua reported today.
A plastic factory in the city's Qixia District exploded on July 28 last year when reckless construction workers damaged a gas pipe and the massive blast caused heavy casualties and direct economic losses of about 48 million yuan.
The Nanjing Intermediate People's Court said in the verdict that Shi Jing, the former director of Maigaoqiao Community in Qixia District, and Zhu Guangyuan, the former director of Qixia Relocation Office, and Wang Youdao, Zhu's subordinate, were guilty of dereliction of duty and abuse of power in handling the factory's relocation, which led to the explosion.
A construction supervisor and two workers were also sentenced to prison for causing the accident.
