60 children suffer fever after indoor swimming

AT least 60 children developed high fever after swimming in an indoor pool in Xi'an, capital of northwest Shaanxi Province, but local health officials said the water met the official hygiene standard.

Ten children are still hospitalized for viral infection in Lintong District People's Hospital in Xi'an. Yet, it remains unknown what kind of virus caused their high fever, the local Chinese Business View reported today.

Besides the 60 or so children, some adults were also affected after swimming in the Tangquan Swimming Pool. They developed symptoms of high fever from July 11-18.

The swimming pool has been closed after the outbreak of the fever. Tests conducted by local health authority showed the water met the hygiene requirement.

A pool manager surnamed Ke said they have a business license and health certificate. The pool is equipped with a good circulation system to keep water free of pollutants. Ke said it was possible that the children got infected from others.

However, some parents doubted the test results and are still negotiating with the swimming pool.
