60 percent of doctors suffer abuse, poll says

ALMOST 60 percent of Chinese doctors have experienced verbal abuse from their patients, while 13 percent have been physically assaulted, a study said yesterday.

The claims were made in a study by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), which polled 12,600 doctors last year, the People鈥檚 Daily reported.

Many assaults are the result of disputes, with patients accusing medics of rushing consultations and prescribing costly medicines, the report said.

A number of doctors have been killed in such disputes, it said, without giving any supporting figures.

The poll claimed that 33 percent of doctors work more than 60 hours a week, despite the legal maximum being just 40 hours.

Sixty percent of respondents said they had low job satisfaction, while 64 percent said they would not advise young people to enter the medical profession.

Based on findings of the poll, and similar studies conducted in 2011 and 2009, the CMDA on Wednesday released a white paper on doctors鈥 working conditions.

It was compiled 鈥渋n the hope of raising public awareness about the strain doctors are under,鈥 CMDA chief Zhang Yanling was quoted as saying.
