63 arrested over drug smuggling
A TOTAL of 63 people have been arrested in southwest China’s Yunnan Province on suspicion of being part of an international drug-smuggling gang.
More than 50 of the suspects are between 15 and 25 years of age, and were used as drug “mules,” police said.
Railway police in Kunming, capital of Yunnan, said that 55 young people were detained between last August and January of this year, while trying to smuggle drugs concealed inside their bodies.
A total of 13.2 kilograms of heroin were seized in the raids, they said.
All of the “mules” claimed that they had been coerced into working for the gang by an unnamed suspect from neighboring Sichuan Province, police said.
They said they were trained before going to Yunnan and smuggling drugs back to Sichuan by train.
The report did not provide details of the other arrests.
