64 held in connection with air gun web sales
POLICE in east China’s Shandong Province have held 64 people from 16 cities and provinces in connection with selling air guns on the Internet.
Officers seized 54 complete air guns and more than 3,000 components in the operation, Shandong Radio-Television Station reported yesterday.
Suspects from provinces including Zhejiang, Sichuan, Jiangxi, Jiangsu and Henan, plus Chongqing, were held by Shandong police in the past month, according to a news program, citing police in Shandong’s Zibo City.
They are alleged to have purchased spare parts online to make guns which were sold at prices ranging from a few hundred yuan to several thousand yuan on the Internet.
The case involves 1 million yuan (US$163,000), said police.
According to Chinese law, an air gun with a velocity of over 80 meters per second is defined as a firearm.
One of the guns sold by the ring has a velocity of 300 meters per second, police told the program.
A suspect told the news program that he was interested in handling and making guns, but regretted becoming involved in the venture.
Those found guilty of involvement can receive jail terms of between three and 10 years. In serious circumstances, a death sentence can be given.
