64m to travel by rail during holiday
ABOUT 64 million people are expected to travel by rail in the 11 days across the holiday period to October 8, the Ministry of Railways said yesterday.
The eight-day holiday runs from October 1, National Day, and covers the Mid-Autumn Festival on October 3, when traditionally families reunite.
The estimated number of travelers would represent an increase of 9.3 percent over the same period of last year, said Wang Yongping, the ministry spokesperson.
Wang said October 1 would bring a peak of 6.9 million passengers either visiting families and friends or touring sites around the country.
The ministry is planning to arrange 33 pairs of additional passenger trains a day to existing routes for major cities and tourist sites, and will also add extra train services to well-known tourist destinations to meet extra demand from holiday makers during the 11-day period, said Wang.
