6-month dragnet search for missing children

POLICE have waged a nationwide search for abducted children and will match the DNA of suspected abductees with those in a national database as China vows to form an effective rescue system before the June 1 Children's Day.

Police bureaus across the country were ordered to conduct a six-month dragnet search, checking every child suspected of being abducted or a vagrant child with an unclear history, Vice Minister of Public Security Zhang Xinfeng said at a meeting yesterday.

DNA samples of suspected children will be compared with those in the national database, Zhang said.

In a coordinated campaign, police resources in every part of the country will be utilized once a report is received. DNA tests should be taken before parents apply for household registration for their adopted child to make sure the child is not bought.

Zhang also called for tougher crackdown in areas plagued by human trafficking.

Police have rescued 13,284 children and 23,085 women and have helped 1,040 children find their parents after DNA pairing since April 2009. A total of 4,535 human trafficking rings have been busted.
