7 Chinese fishermen abducted

SEVEN Chinese nationals working for a private fishing company were kidnapped off the Bakassi Peninsula in southwest Cameroon, the Chinese Embassy in the Central African country has confirmed.

A group calling itself the Africa Marine Commando has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, which occurred on Friday morning, the embassy said.

It said the seven kidnapped Chinese nationals were not in danger for the time being and that the kidnappers had provided them with water and food.

Two fishing vessels of China's Dalian Beihai Fishing Company were attacked and robbed about 2am on Friday, according to the embassy. The ships returned to the port of Limbe about 7am with two sailors on board slightly injured.

The Chinese and Cameroonian governments were paying great attention to the issue, the embassy said, adding measures had been taken to ensure the release of the hostages as rapidly as possible.

Attacks by gunmen have occurred in recent years off the Bakassi Peninsula.

A group of assailants attacked a vessel working in an offshore oil field for French petroleum firm Total in October 2008. Ten of the 15 crew members on board the vessel Bourbon Sagitta were kidnapped near Bakassi Peninsula.

A series of attacks by armed bandits killed several army officers before the Frenchmen were taken hostage.

The Cameroonian army deployed a Rapid Response Unit last April to beef up security in the area.
