7 detained in connection with deadly arson attack in Shandong

Police have detained seven people, including a real estate developer and a village head, in connection with an arson attack that killed one person and injured three others in a village in east China's Shandong Province, officers said yesterday.

Four suspects surnamed Li, Li, Chai and Liu poured gasoline onto a tent in which Geng Fulin, Li Chongnan, Li Delian and Du Yongjun were staying, and set it alight, killing Geng and leaving the other three injured in Dujiatuan Village in the early morning of March 21, police said.

The victims were staying in the tent to guard land from being taken by developers, it was reported.

Police said a real estate developer surnamed Cui collaborated with the village head surnamed Du to persuade a person surnamed Wang to burn down the tent. Wang then in turn told the four suspects to commit the crime.

All seven people suspected of being involved in the incident have been detained and an investigation is continuing.
