7 drown after girl falls into reservoir
Seven members of a family on a holiday outing in southern China drowned when a 17-year-old girl fell into a reservoir and several relatives tried to rescue her.
Officials in Shantou, a city in Guangdong Province, said none of the relatives were strong swimmers but had jumped in to save the girl on Sunday.
The girl and six of her relatives died, including her parents and her brother and sister, aged 13 and 15.
She had fallen into the Xinlin Reservoir while washing up after a graveside ceremony honoring deceased relatives on China’s annual tomb-sweeping day holiday.
Officials said the seven bodies had been recovered at around 4pm on Sunday and warning signs posted around the reservoir to prevent similar accidents.
Local schools were ordered to enhance their safety education.
The World Health Organization said in a report released in November 2014 that more than 160 people drown each day in China and that drowning was the leading cause of death among children and teenagers.
In Ulanqab, a city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, four boys, aged 15 to 16, drowned in a reservoir when they fell in as they were playing in April last year.
In the Inner Mongolian county of Shangdu, seven high school students, all around 15 years old, drowned when they went swimming in a reservoir in August 2011.
Authorities blamed management oversight and lack of warning signs for both of these tragic accidents.
