7 sent to jail for dealing in human-organ trading
SEVEN men in Beijing were sentenced up to seven years and eight months in jail yesterday for illegally trading in human organs.
The Haidian District People's Court drew much attention as the three separate cases were the first of their kind to be judged by law on Chinese mainland
Four of the dealers - Liu Qiangsheng, Yang Shihai, Liu Ping and Cai Shaohua - admitted to illegal business trading and received sentences of up to four years sentence and fines up to 100,000 yuan (US$ 14,584), reported yesterday's Beijing Evening News.
The group started trading human organs in Beijing and the central Henan Province early last year. They contacted buyers and sellers through online patient bulletin boards.
In one transaction, the four took 150,000 yuan from a patient surnamed Xie, who was in need of a half liver. They promised the seller, surnamed Yang, 350,000 yuan.
However, Yang got only 250,000 yuan after the transplant and threatened to call the police. The group beat him in Beijing and were later detained by police
Among the traders, Liu Qiangsheng and Yang Shihai had sold their own livers. Liu said he was forced to sell his liver at 450,000 yuan in 2008 to pay for his father's operation fee. Yang Shihai sold 60 percent of his kidney out of poverty when he was 23.
In the other cases, the organ dealers Zeng Kang, Cai Shaohua and Cai Shaoxia received up to seven years and eight months in jail.
