70 Siberian tiger cubs bred in NE China park

CHINA'S biggest Siberian tiger breeding center said on Saturday that more than 70 tiger cubs were born this year with the breeding season coming to a close.

Heilongjiang Siberian Tiger Park, where about 1,000 Siberian tigers live, each year handpicks certain tigers to breed the next generation.

"It's good for the balance of the core species group," said Liu Dan, the park's chief engineer.

Liu said about 100 tiger cubs could be born by the end of this year.

The tiger cubs would stay with their mothers for three months and then begin living independently in outdoor areas of the park, Liu added.

Siberian tigers are among the world's most endangered species. They mostly live in northeast China and eastern Russia.
