70 brought in over child abductions
POLICE in the northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have taken 70 suspects into custody for allegedly abducting children and training them to steal and rob.
Police have busted eight criminal gangs in a nationwide crackdown since May 1 and rescued at least 16 children, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
Investigations showed most of these children were abducted or lured by suspects to live a vagabond life through stealing and robbing.
The Xinjiang government promised last month to bring all abducted Xinjiang children home and help them go back to school.
The region has sent bilingual police, capable of speaking both Mandarin and Uygur, to public security authorities of other provinces to assist in the campaign, said a government spokesman. These include Anhui, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Hubei and Guangdong.
The Ministry of Public Security also ordered police to launch a crackdown on the kidnapping and coercion of Xinjiang children.
