70 rare crocodiles found hidden in truck
FRONTIER police in south China last week discovered the bodies of 70 Siamese crocodiles and a further 88 severed tails hidden in a cargo truck.
The reptiles were found inside the vehicle during a routine procedure at a checkpoint in Fangchenggang, a city in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on the border with Vietnam.
Officials saw that the amount of goods inside the vehicle differed from the information provided by the driver, the frontier police department said.
The crocodiles had been sealed in 16 boxes, it said.
The driver said he had been told to drive a consignment of seafood from Dongxing, also in Guangxi, to Fangchenggang, and had no idea that it also contained the illegal crocodiles, police said.
An investigation into the case is under way.
Siamese crocodiles are a critically endangered species native to Southeast Asia. Their skins are used in the production of leather goods. It is illegal in China to raise the animals without a license or to trade or traffic them.
