70km dash to freedom

MORE than 2,200 Chinese construction workers endured a hazardous 70 kilometer dash to reach a chartered Greek ferry waiting to evacuate them from the deadly chaos in Libya yesterday.

The evacuees, employees of the China Communication Constructions Engineering Co, were waiting to board the "Hellenic Spirit" in a line that stretched several kilometers at the port of Benghazi.

The ferry, chartered by the Chinese Embassy in Athens, will take the workers to Crete, from where they will fly home.

They had been employed at a construction site some 70 kilometers from Benghazi and had been stopped and threatened by armed personnel along the way, with their vehicles and belongings forcibly taken away.

Some 12,000 Chinese nationals had been evacuated from Libya in the ongoing large-scale evacuation operations by yesterday morning, the Foreign Ministry confirmed.

"The evacuees were either flown back to China or transferred temporarily to politically stable countries neighboring Libya," the ministry said.
