71 workers hospitalized for cadmium exposure

POOR health and safety measures at a zinc-processing company in northwest China's Gansu Province have left 266 workers with high levels of cadmium in their blood and hospitalized 71.

A total of 869 workers of Baohui Group, the biggest zinc smelter in Gansu, have had physical checkups by November 18 and 266 were found to have elevated levels of the heavy metal. One worker was suspected of cadmium poisoning, China News Service reported yesterday.

Seventy-one workers are receiving treatment in Huixian County People's Hospital and the investigation found that poor protection measures were to blame for the high cadmium levels.

Production at the Gansu facility had been halted and a workplace safety assessment was underway, the report said.

The group has over 1,700 employees.
