8 Beijing students attempt suicide over bleak outlook
EIGHT students who were told to quit a Beijing music school due to their poor academics made an appointment to commit suicide together.
One student of the Chinese Music Conservatory Middle School is being treated in a hospital for attempted suicide; four remain missing and the rest three have returned home, the Beijing Times reported today.
The 10-graders of the school's vocal department were told to drop out before the end of August because they failed more than one-third of the required courses.
Frustrated and helpless, these students brought sleeping pills to school and decided to kill themselves together, according to the unnamed girl who is receiving treatment in the hospital, the report said.
The school is investigating the case and promised to publish their findings within 10 days.
The school has strict rules. Those who fail in more than one-third of the courses are advised to quit. However, some students are mentally weak and don't know how to handle pressure. They chose suicide to escape frustration, said an unnamed teacher.
