8 caught for abducting, trafficking 10 women

EIGHT people suspected of abducting and trafficking at least 10 women have been detained by police in Anhui Province.

Police found four women being held hostage in a remote brick house in Yanjian Village in Dingyuan County.

The place was surrounded by fields and fish farms and vehicles couldn’t enter the area.

The house and farm belonged to one of the suspects, surnamed Yan, who had asked another suspect, surnamed Zhang, to keep a watch on the women.

Police said the house did not have any windows — just two palm-sized holes in the wall that allowed in some air. It did not have any electricity either.

The released women told police that they were only allowed to step outside when “buyers” came for them. They were asked to walk around to show they did not suffer from physical disabilities, the Anhui Business News reported.

The women said they would be severely beaten up if they tried to escape. Zhang admitted that he would beat them until they relented. He also told police he had raped five women. Some of the women said they had also been sexually assaulted by Yan and those who abducted and traded them.

The suspects would make sure the women did not get pregnant so that they could fetch a higher price. Police said the women were sold for between 10,000 yuan (US$1,633.77) and 20,000 yuan.

Police discovered the plot in August, when a woman, who had been sold by Yan, managed to escape and reported to police. Police busted Yan and released four women and caught eight suspects, including a “buyer.” The paper claimed the women were sold as “sex slaves.”

The suspects would target women with mental illness at railway stations in Bengbu City, Chuzhou City and adjoining Nanjing City, capital of Jiangsu Province. They would lure them away and dropped them with Yan, who would look for “buyers” for them.

Police told the paper that one of the women was yet to identified.
