8 detained in baby trafficking case

EIGHT people have been detained over alleged child trafficking in Fujian Province, police said on Saturday.

Frontier defence police in southern China's Fuzhou City, capital of Fujian, captured three suspects from a car in a road check on December 24 last year, when the three, one man and two women, were en route to Pingtan County to sell two infant girls.

During interrogation, the three suspects, all natives of Pingtan County, confessed that they had bought the infants in Jiangxi Province for 10,000 yuan (US$1,465) each. They planned to sell them for 15,000 yuan each, police said.

Another five suspects in the case were detained in the following three months.

Further police investigations found that the human trafficking ring has kidnapped 12 infants, including 11 girls. The suspects bought most of the girls from parents in the remote countryside where boys are preferred.

Police have rescued five of the kidnapped children.
