8 die in coal mine blast
An explosion at a recently closed central China coal mine yesterday left eight people dead and 36 injured.
The blast was reported at about 5:30am at Fenghuangling Coal Mine of Zhanhe District in Pingdingshan City, Henan Province, a city government official said.
Half of a two-story building near a shaft entrance collapsed.
All the injured people have been hospitalized.
The blast left a hole 10 meters deep and more than 10 meters wide in the ground.
Windows within 50 meters of the blast site were shattered and the roof of a large warehouse blown off.
Dozens of rescuers were working with excavators at the site.
The blast site is about 30 meters from the entrance of a coal shaft.
Three of the dead were mine security guards, said a spokesman for the rescue headquarters. The others had not been identified yet.
Fifteen of the injured were people living near the mine. The rest were maintenance and security staff.
The mine, capable of an annual output of 150,000 tons, had its electricity switched off on June 21.
The mine was not operating when the explosion happened, according to the spokesman.
