8 die in separate mining accidents
AUTHORITIES in central China's Henan Province confirmed yesterday that three miners had died and eight others remain trapped underground in a flooded mine.
Rescuers pulled out the three bodies on Friday afternoon, more than four days after a flood at 12:40am on Monday trapped 11 miners in three iron ore pits run by Shunda Mining Co Ltd in Biyang County.
Rescue efforts were hampered by a delay in bringing in large water pumps due to the area's difficult terrain, the county government said.
The location of the trapped miners remains unknown.
Wang Xinke, deputy county work safety chief, was removed from his post shortly after the flood.
In another accident, five workers died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in a tin mine in southwest China's Yunnan Province, local authorities said Friday.
Five miners from Ruida Tin Mine in Gejiu City went looking for a missing co-worker after ending their shift at 11:20pm Thursday. Four of them collapsed in a disused shaft, said the survivor.
The bodies of the four miners and the missing man were recovered early Friday morning.
Work safety officials and police are investigating.
