8 injured in passenger plane's emergency evacuation triggered by likely false fire alarm
EIGHT passengers were injured this morning during an emergency evacuation on a domestic Hainan Airlines flight, which was triggered by a likely false fire alarm onboard.
A fire alarm sent from the plane's cargo cabin forced the plane, heading for Guangzhou, to return to Hefei, shortly after its takeoff about 10am today.
All 160 people onboard including the cabin crew took an emergency escape after the plane landed safely. However, eight passengers were injured and immediately rushed to hospitals, Xinhua News Agency reported.
It is unclear yet how badly they were injured. The rest of the passengers had been re-scheduled for a new flight.
An official, Fang Yangming, with the Xinqiao Airport of Hefei city reportedly said that the system reported the fire alarm only minutes after the plane took off.
Authorities examined through the cargo cabin after all the passengers had been evacuated but did not find any evidence of fire. Fang further added that fire fighters later still used water guns to treat the cargo cabin as a prevention measure.
Local authorities would launch an investigation to find what triggered the fire alarm, Fang stated.
