8 jailed in vile case of kidnap and child sex

EIGHT people, including a county legislator, four government officials and a teacher, were jailed yesterday for terms ranging from seven years to life over offences relating to child rape, abduction and prostitution in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Yuan Ronghui, an unemployed woman who forced 11 schoolgirls into prostitution in Xishui County from October 2007 to June 2008, received a life term from the Intermediate People's Court of Zunyi City.

Yuan used her own residence as the venue for 10 of the sexual assaults after her two teenage accomplices abducted girls, three of them under the age of 14, from a primary school and three junior high schools, the court was told.

Yuan Ronghui, 38, met a 14-year-old girl surnamed Liu, who had dropped out of school, and Liu's boyfriend, surnamed Yuan, 15, at a hotel that Yuan Ronghui was illegally running in October 2007, Xishui County People's Court was told in an earlier hearing.

After an agreement between the trio, the teen couple then kidnapped teenage girls on the street and brought them to Yuan Ronghui, who was in charge of "finding clients."

They agreed that Yuan Ronghui would take 30 percent of sex-service fees, leaving the rest for Liu and her boyfriend.

Liu and her boyfriend took nude pictures of them and beat them as a way to force the young girls to offer sex, the county hearing was told.

Yuan Ronghui arranged for the 10 young girls to be raped at her residence, an apartment she rented. The other girl was taken to a hotel for sex service.

Seven other people were jailed for terms of seven to 14 years after being convicted of child rape.

Feng Zhiyang, 43, once a teacher at the Xishui No. 1 Vocational School, raped two girls three times, paying roughly 100 yuan (US$14.60) each time. He was jailed for 14 years.

Legal affairs official Chen Cun, 38, who raped one girl twice, received 12 years.

Mu Mingzhong, a real estate company manager and also a county legislator, was sentenced to 10 years after being convicted of raping two girls twice.

Cabbie Feng Yong, Li Shouming, 47, who headed the county migration office, county social security bureau official Huang Yongliang, 28, and land official Chen Mengran, 27, each received seven years.

The officials, the teacher and the manager deserved severe penalties as they inflicted severe harm on the girls and damaged social order, the sentencing judge said.

The charges of statutory rape were first raised in a closed-door trial at the county court on April 8. That hearing ended the next day with no verdict.

The trial moved to the intermediate court in May after new evidence was submitted.
