8 killed, 6 injured in accidents in Guangxi

THE death toll from a road accident Friday has risen to eight after one more death was confirmed in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local traffic police said yesterday.

The accident happened at around 9pm Friday when a truck registered in neighboring Guangdong Province collided with a crane and a local truck on a highway linking Rong County and Cenxi County in east Guangxi, according to the regional traffic police department.

Six people were killed on the spot and one who was seriously injured died in hospital. The eighth body was found when rescuers were clearing the site, police said. The collision was caused by a brake failure on the Guangdong truck.

Also at around 9pm, an explosion occurred on a bus bound for Guangdong about 46 kilometers from the Shibu toll gate on the outskirts of Nanning, capital of Guangxi, Nanning police said.

Six passengers were injured and received medical treatment. It was not immediately known how many passengers were on the bus at the time of the explosion. Police believe the bus from Tiandeng County was carrying explosives.
