8 people killed, 1 missing as boat sinks

EIGHT people have been confirmed dead and one is still missing after a boat sank in the Zijiang River in central China’s Hunan Province on Saturday, authorities said.

The tragedy occurred about 4pm when a private boat carrying 18 people sank on the Jiugongqiao section of the river. Nine people were rescued.

Tang Huilong from the village of Tanghong in Jiugongqiao in Shaoyang County had borrowed the boat to take his family to visit an island.

The vessel sank on its return journey. An investigation showed it got into difficulty due to the strong current.

“The boat started to sink and everybody fell into the water,” said a survivor, whose husband was among the fatalities.

According to an official from the local maritime bureau, the boat was fit to carry a maximum of eight passengers.

Among the passengers was a 61-year-old and an infant.

Seven of the nine people rescued have been discharged from hospital.

Rescue work and further investigation is ongoing.
