8 protesters disappear
SIX villagers in a southwest China county have been arrested and another eight are missing following their battle to stop a government's plan to bury garbage near their homes.
Villagers assume the missing eight have also been detained by police, they told yesterday's China Economic Times newspaper.
The warrant said they were arrested for "hindering government work," said Liu Zhengjiao from Fuxing Village, Guanyang County in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Liu's husband and father-in-law were among the arrested villagers.
They began a petition in July last year, when Guanyang's county government decided to build a trash burial site in the village. But their complaints were in vain.
In December, construction teams tried to enter the village and started construction but were resisted by local villagers. The resistance escalated in May this year, when hundreds of villagers took to the site and resisted entry of constructors. The violence was not quelled until June when more than 600 police officers were sent to the site.
Villagers said it is illegal for the county government to start the trash site without consulting the village's 3,600-plus residents.
