8 sentenced in baby theft
EIGHT people were sentenced to up to seven years behind bars in east China's Zhejiang Province for stealing a baby boy and selling him 10 times within 15 months, the Youth Times reported yesterday.
One of the criminals, surnamed Gan, first stole the baby from his mother. Gan and his wife visited the baby's mother in August 2010 on the pretense of doing business with her. Gan's wife grabbed the 14-month-old baby forcibly and left. The mother followed and was also abducted. The woman and her son were sold by the human traffickers.
Gan and his wife sold the pair to a man surnamed Liang in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. Liang took them to central China and sold the baby there. The mother was later sold to a relative of Gan in southern China's Yunnan Province for 5,000 yuan (US$795).
Liang was arrested in Yunnan in July 2011. Police tracked down Liang's buyers and found that the baby had already been sold to someone else. Police worked on the case for 15 months and finally found the baby in east China's Shandong Province.
The last buyer, surnamed Xue, paid 60,000 yuan for the baby. Xue and his wife had been married for over 10 years and could not have babies of their own.
The baby was sent back to his father by police last October.
