8 workers succumb to heatstroke in Shandong
EIGHT outdoor workers have died from sunstroke in east China in the worst hot spell this year, sparking criticism against their employer for not taking care of them.
The eight victims in Ji'nan, capital of Shandong Province, were all sanition workers and migrant workers on constructions sites, who worked under the scorching sun before they were sent to hospital, Xinhua news agency reported today.
Local hospitals are packed with sunstroke patients as temperature has stayed above 36 degreees Celsius since last week.
One of the victims, a migrant worker who died in hospital on Monday, remains a John Doe as no one came to claim his body. His co-workers who brought him in don't even know his name, Xinhua reported.
Meanwhile, 53 people died reportedly from heat-related illness in Xi'an, the capital city of northwest Shaanxi Province.
