80,000 limit on visitors to Palace Museum
THE Palace Museum in Beijing is launching a pilot scheme next month to limit daily visitors to 80,000.
Controlling visitor numbers is necessary to protect the security of both the cultural relics and tourists, said Shan Jixiang, the museum’s director.
As a renowned world cultural heritage with a history extending 600 years, the museum has been receiving more than 10 million visitors a year.
In the past three years, the annual number has exceeded 15 million, far more than counterparts such as the Louvre and the British Museum, Shan said.
Such enthusiasm has put great pressure on services and safety, Shan said.
He said the museum was updating its ticket reservation system to make it more convenient to book tickets and guide visitors to avoid peak periods.
Yesterday, an exhibition of photographs from the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the Republic of China opened at the museum.
It is the first such exhibition since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and it includes 300 items selected from more than 20,000 photographs and glass negatives, the museum said yesterday.
The exhibition will run until July 17.
