844 in subsidence drama

NEARLY 900 people in four villages in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, were evacuated following land subsidence, local authorities said yesterday.

Initial expert analysis showed the subsidence may be caused by underground water drainage in the region's karst landscape. The depletion of underground water supplies may also lead to the collapse of the karst landscape.

There were no reports of injuries, but 844 villagers were evacuated. The subsidence also caused one building to collapse and left six leaning.

A fissure 1.5 meters deep and 2.5 meters wide opened up Friday on the road outside a middle school. Prior to the incident, the school had hired workers to drill a well at the school for drinking water.
