87 children taken sick
AUTHORITIES said yesterday that 87 children had fallen ill at a kindergarten in northwest China's Gansu Province on Friday.
A panel of experts said the illness could be related to yogurt served at the Lantai Kindergarten in Lanzhou, the provincial capital.
The children, aged three to five years, complaining of stomach problems, diarrhea, vomiting and fever at about 4pm, according to teachers at the kindergarten reported.
None of the children was seriously ill after medical treatment, the Lanzhou city emergency response office said.
Forty of the 87 children were well enough to be discharged from hospital at noon yesterday.
Yuan Zhanting, the mayor of Lanzhou, ordered medical staff to provide the best possible care for the children and instructed food safety authorities to step up monitoring.
