8th child dies in county with same surname

AN eighth child surnamed Cai has died accidentally in Tiantai County in east China's Zhejiang Province this year.

But police said the eight deaths were all accidents and in non-related Cai families, today's www.zjol.com reported.

Police have ruled out murder after careful investigation, Wang Xiejiao, political commissar of Tiantai Police, told the Zhejiang-based news Website.

The latest victim was six-year-old Cai Shaohan, who was found hanged by a telephone wire in a phone box on March 2 in front of Tiantai Experimental Middle School, beside her parents' food store, Tiantai government told www.zjol.com.

She was sent to hospital but died. Her only injuries were a suffocation mark made by the phone wire, police said.

Her parents accepted the investigation results and were given 88,000 yuan (US$12,891) compensation by the telephone booth's owner, China Telecom's Tiantai branch, the government said.

The first five Cai children, three girls and two boys aged 7 to 13 from Tiantai's Xialuwang Village, drowned in a fish pond in February. Their families signed a compensation agreement worth 480,000 yuan with the person leasing the fish pond.

Days later, another two girls surnamed Cai were drowned in Tiantai's Pingzheng Town.
