9 dead, 13 missing as county is swamped
CONTINUOUS rain triggered severe floods in a county in southwest China's Guizhou Province, leaving nine people dead and 13 missing by last night.
It also forced the relocation of 6,000 residents in Wangmo County of Qianxinan Prefecture, officials said. Floodwaters inundated the county seat, disrupting power and water supplies and telecommunications in seven towns. The Wangmo River's water level was 3 meters higher than the safe level.
The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs jointly initiated an emergency plan yesterday. Authorities have sent 100 tents, 2,000 quilts and 3,000 sets of clothes to the region.
The central government has sent a special team to Guizhou to coordinate relief work.
