9 dead, 7 missing after fishing boat sinks off NE China coast
NINE people died and seven were missing after a fishing boat sank off northeastern Chinese coast early today, local maritime authorities said.
Huge waves sank the boat with 17 crew members on aboard at about 2 am today when they were about to transfer to a bigger fishing vessel 2 nautical miles away from a fishing port in Dalian, the Dalian maritime bureau said in a statement.
Bodies of the nine people had been recovered by 3:30 pm, it said, adding that seven remained missing.
The rescue and search operation, involving a helicopter, seven maritime patrol ships and 120 other boats, was still under way.
The only person who was saved was in normal condition and under observation at a local hospital.
