9 dead after train hits villagers on way to work
NINE people died and four others were injured when they were hit by a freight train in Funing County in north China's Hebei Province yesterday, local authorities said.
The accident happened at around 5:28am when villagers were crossing a bridge on the Funing section of the line linking Datong City in Shanxi Province and Qinhuangdao City in Hebei.
The railway line is a major route for coal produced in Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to be moved to other parts of the country.
A preliminary investigation found that heavy rainfall had destroyed a road in Qijiazhai Village and residents were using the line to get to work, China Central Television reported.
They had climbed over a guardrail onto the track.
The injured are being treated in hospital and they are in stable condition.
The freight train's brakes might have malfunctioned, an insider said.
Qinhuangdao has been pounded by torrential rain for the past few days.
