9 detained for ‘online rumors’
NINE people have been detained on suspicion of spreading online rumors claiming several military officers were involved in protests.
The suspects “fabricated and spread the rumors” on the Internet, the People’s Liberation Army Daily reported yesterday.
They are accused of using microblogs and mobile messaging apps to “spread military-related rumors, slander military cadres and falsely accuse troops of being involved in mass incidents,” the report claimed.
“Mass incidents” are a euphemism for protests.
Some of them also “demonized the military’s image,” it said.
The people confessed to the crime and had been sentenced to administrative detention, it said, adding that they would also have to undergo “education.”
