NINE people including a policeman are facing criminal charges for a gas explosion that killed 11 people and injured 31 in Xi'an, capital of northwest Shaanxi Province last November, local media reported today.

The explosion occurred around 7:30am on November 14 in a restaurant on the first floor of a commercial building in the city's Gaoxin District. It also damaged 12 surrounding stores and 53 vehicles.

Investigators found illegal handling of liquefied gas and lack of safety supervision which led to the deadly accident, the Sanqin Metropolis News reported.

The nine defendants include the restaurant owner and manager and a local policeman who was in charge of safety supervision in the block.

In addition, 11 restaurant employees and local officials were given administrative punishment, and the license of the restaurant has been revoked.
