9 face murder, fraud charges
PROSECUTORS will press murder and fraud charges against nine people who allegedly lured a mentally retarded man to work in a mine where they killed him in an effort to get a large compensation package from the mine owner by claiming he died in an accident.
Liu Xingwei, deputy Party secretary of Leibo County, Sichuan Province, said they are still verifying the identity of the dead miner, who was allegedly pushed off a vent and died on a cart in the Dongxiang lead-zinc mine in March, Caixin Century reported yesterday. It was the man's ninth day on the job.
The suspects said they bought the man, who used to be homeless, for 5,200 yuan (US$805.23) from a farmer in Leibo County. They took him to the mine, helped him land a job with a fake ID card and killed him, police said. They then pretended to be his relatives to demand 1.2 million yuan in compensation, according to the report.
Police are still looking for one other suspect.
Between 2007 and 2009, some 20 similar cases occurred and most of the suspects were from Leibo, according to Xiaoxiang Morning Herald.
The newspaper said some families in Leibo, an impoverished area, had "adopted" mentally retarded people, who were sometimes bought from others. They were then resold to others to work elsewhere in the country, Xinmin Weekly reported earlier.
