9 firefighters die in Yunnan forest fire
A forest fire which was put out on Tuesday in southwestern Yunnan Province revived on Wednesday afternoon and killed nine firefighters and injured seven others before being put out again, Xinhua reported yesterday.
The Yunnan Forest Fire Prevention Headquarters said flames were spotted again around 4:30pm on Wednesday near Jinhe Village in Jianchuan County. About 140 firefighters immediately rushed to the site and managed to bring the fire under control yesterday morning.
But a strong wind in the afternoon fanned up the flames again, which quickly enveloped firefighters who were clearing the burnt area, causing heavy casualties, Xinhua reported.
All the seven injured firefighters were sent to a local hospital and are now in stable conditions. A reinforcement of 650 firefighters joined in the battle to put out the conflagration, Xinhua said.
A local villager named Li Ping was detained for allegedly starting the fire, the report said.
