A COUPLE alleged to be behind a business selling counterfeit cosmetics to buyers in Africa and the Middle East are among nine suspects being held by police in Yuyao, a city in east China’s Zhejiang Province.

According to yesterday’s Modern Gold Express newspaper, police seized more than 180,000 items from the couple’s premises. Among them were fake Vaseline and Sensodyne toothpaste.

The newspaper said the husband, surnamed Lu, used to work for a cometics company.

Another suspect, surnamed Zhu, from Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, is said to have helped the couple package products at his factory. Also being held by police is Li Xiaoyun, who is alleged to have acted as a gobetween to sell the items overseas, the newspaper said.

It said Li, who had a shop in Yiwu, a city in Zhejiang famous for its small commodities, took overseas orders and had profited hugely from the business. She was said to have bought cars worth at least 4 million yuan (US$639,000).
