9 in jail for disturbing social order

NINE villagers were sentenced to jail terms ranging from one to five years in Guangdong Province for disrupting social order and public service, a local court said yesterday.

Dissatisfied with compensation by the government and a company over a quarry, Lai Juncheng and Chen Xuankui, villagers from Shuangjian Village in Fengkai County, Zhaoqing City, organized a group to disrupt the construction of Resources Cement Holdings Limited Company, the court said.

Dozens of villagers attacked three police officers with rocks and clubs before other cops rescued the trio on June 17. A total of 88 policemen were injured, a Fengkai court said.

Lai and Chen were sentenced to five years as they were the leaders of the group.
