9 jailed for mine flood that killed 38 workers in 2010
NINE coal mine officials and engineers were given jail sentences for violating safety rules and causing the deadly mine flood in Shanxi Province two years ago that trapped 153 workers and killed 38 of them.
Jiang Shijie, manager of the Wangjialing Coal Mine, was sentenced to four years for dereliction of duty and eight others received were sentenced to three years, the Xiangning County People's Court said.
Prosecutors said the convicts failed to check the accumulation of underground water in an abandoned shaft that caused the disastrous flood on March 28, 2010, did not take proper measures to evacuate workers, and ignored the warnings about flood hazards.
Reckless production in violation of safety rules was also the factor behind the accident, the People's Court, a newspaper run by China's Supreme Court, reported.
The nine convicts were given lenient sentences because they engaged in the rescue operation and turned themselves in after the accident.
All the survivors, trapped underground for more than one week, were slightly injured. The accident caused an economic loss of nearly 50 million yuan (US$7.86 million), the court said.
